The 2021 NSAL Drama Competition

Indiana Drama/Acting Competition 2021 presented by the Bloomington Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL) in partnership with Bloomington Academy of Film and Theatre.

Thank you for your interest in the 2021 NSAL Drama/Acting Competition. We are excited to have you join us on March 27 for our ZOOM Competition. Please read the rules and requirements outlined below and then follow the link to sign up!

Rules 

  • The competition is open to contestants who have passed their 18th birthday but not yet reached their 30th birthday as of April 30, 2021.

  • Contestants must be residents of Indiana or enrolled in a college, graduate program, or acting school in Indiana. 

Performance Requirements 

  • Contestants must present two monologues, one classical and one modern, from memory and in English from published full-length stage plays. In addition, one of the monologues must be a comedic piece, and one must be a serious piece. If a contestant selects a comedic piece from the classical period, then the serious selection must be from the modern period, or vice versa. 

  • Television and film scripts and one-act plays may not be used.

  • Selections must demonstrate contrasting characteristics and show a full and varied range of the contestant’s ability. 

  • Upon entering the stage, contestants will announce their numbers, the names of both plays, playwrights, and roles in the order of presentation. Contestants’ names will not be used. 

  • Total performance time, including transition time but excluding introduction, must not exceed five minutes. 

  • No hand props, costumes, or recorded sound may be used, but one chair may be used. 

  • Contestants should wear appropriate comfortable clothing that enables them to move freely and should avoid clothing styles and patterns, jewelry, and other accessories that might distract.
